Breath your Fat out
June 13, 2019
To lose fat we generally have to eat less and move more.
However, have you every considered how fat leaves your body?
When surveyed over 50% of doctors, dietitians and personal trainers responded by saying through heat/energy. Other popular responses included faeces, sweat/urine, carbon dioxide and turns into muscle.
The British Medical Journal (BMJ) concludes that 84% is via breath in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 16% from water (H2O).
Stoichiometry shows that complete oxidation of 10 kg of human fat requires 29 kg of inhaled oxygen producing 28 kg of CO2 and 11 kg of H2O. This tells us the metabolic fate of fat but remains silent about the proportions of the mass stored in those 10 kg of fat that depart as carbon dioxide or water during weight loss.
Further calculations show to lose 10kg of fat, you need to inhale 29kg of oxygen resulting in the exhalation of 19.6kg of carbon dioxide and 9.4kg of water. Meaning, 84% of your fat loss disappears as you breath out!!
Weight loss through reducing fat can be just a function of breath (and exhaling) more.
Additional movement throughout the day, or any exercise that will increase the amount
you breath over a period of time will help you lose fat.
Everything else being equal with calorie consumption.
When somebody loses weight, where does the fat go?
